About us

The Research, Development & Innovation department of Damen helps the company to become the most sustainable and digitally connected shipyard in the world. We give support to the business in the development of an innovative product portfolio and offer pro-active advice with the aim of further improving the quality and performance of the Damen products and services.

The RD&I department is divided into Research, Development, and Enabling Technologies branches. There are six research teams.

Damen invests substantially in its own internal R&D projects. Moreover, we are also very active in collaborative R&D projects with industry partners, as well as academia and knowledge institutes, both nationally and internationally.

The role

Two major aspects of design that one of the RD&I teams has it focus on, are the integration between design tooling and simulation models, as well as ensuring repeatability of the execution and traceability of information.

The approach for these aspects, is the implementation of a model-based system architecture environment. Information is stored and exchanged in these system models instead of documents, and calculations ranging from basic computations to complex numerical simulations are highly automated and integrated into the process execution.

You will collaborate with the staff of Damen RD&I; supporting the colleagues with creating the structure of this model-based system, using the commercial software Dassault Cameo.

Key accountabilities

The targets of the dissertation work:

  • Formalizing a flowchart for the initial design of an offshore patrol vessel, aiming at estimating lightship weight, propulsion power, engine room and fuel tanks sizing based on initial main dimensions and deadweight requirements;
